Virtual Lab for control engineering education on the Web

Conventional lectures and laboratory courses show limitations in representing of networks of complex dynamic subjects. Examples, methods and tools cannot be visualized or tested by the student sufficiently in this environment. The limitation in the adaptation to the individual student and to the speed of learning at a fixed time and place is inherent. A supplementary virtual lab during the conventional lab course and within additional distance education in the form of a course offered across the Internet, will fully engage the students in the learning process through an interactive, dynamic environment involving the student, on-line materials and an instructor.

The World Wide Web and the hypertext technique have significantly enhanced the ability to train and educate electronically. Whether the materials are a stand-alone tutorial or a full-fledged on-line workshop, the Web provides significant new functionality in transmitting information to the student and providing forums for exchange. When integrated with off-line control system design tools such as MATLAB or real-time tools, the Web could greatly increase students' level of involvement in the training experience in computer-aided control system design courses. The Web provides an effective mechanism for integrating design tools into a single interface and is an ideal tool for information which is itself rapidly changing. The Web is revolutionizing some areas of study through increased opportunities for learning and alternative formats for information.
